Materials

Cotton Yarn
6.5mm crochet hook & 10mm for tassels
Tapestry needle and
scissors
Chain 265 to achieve about 60 inches in length

Row 1 Hdc 264 along chain. 1sc and turn for next row.

Row 2 Hdc in back loop only of previous row =264 stitches. 1 chain and turn for next row.

Rows 3 – 6 Repeat Hdc in back loop only for 4 more rows and end each row with 1chain and turn.

Row 7 Chain 2 and DC in same stitch (creating 2 stitches to start the row. Skip 2 stitches and 3DC in the 3rd stitch. Repeat skipping 2 stitches and 3DC in 3rd stitch through the remainder of the row, creating 87 bunches of 3DC. End the row with one DC at the last stitch. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 8 DC in same stitch as the Chain 2. Decrease DC into each of 3 DC of previous row by wrap one loop around hook, insert into 1st of 3 DC of previous row, wrap loop around hook and pull. Pull through 1st 2 loops, keep remaining 2 loops on hook. Wrap another loop around hook, insert into 2nd of the 3 DC of previous row, wrap loop around hook and pull through, pull through 2 loops, keeping 3 loops on hook. Wrap loop around hook and insert into 3rd of 3 DC of previous row, wrap loop around hook and pull. Pull through 2 loops on hook.

Finally pull through all 4 remaining loops on hook and chain 1. Repeat this 87 times (for 87 bunches). End row with 1 DC and chain 2, turn. Row 9 DC in same stitch as the Chain 2. 3DC into larger loop that was created by the previous row’s “pull through 4 loops” action. Repeat this to create 87 bunches of 3DC in this row. End last stitch with 1DC, chain 2 and turn. Repeat Rows 8 and 9: 10 more times each to create a total of 23 rows (Rows 7 through 29).

Row 30 Chain 1 (instead of Chain 2 from previous rows, start with only a chain 1). Hdc across all DC of previous row = 264 stitches.
Row 31 – 36 Repeat Row 30 HDC in back loop only of previous hdc stitches. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 37 SS into each of the hdc stitches of previous row to give same framework of beginning of project.

Pockets

Create 2 identical pockets with the following stitches: Chain 31
Row 1 HDC into each chain = 30 stitches. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 2 – 16 HDC into back loop only if previous row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 17 Chain 1 additional stitch to create a chain 2. 1DC into the same stitch, creating 2 stitches to start the row. Skip 2 stitches and 3DC in the 3rd stitch. Repeat skipping 2 stitches and 3DC in 3rd stitch through the remainder of the row, creating 87 bunches of 3DC. End the row with one DC at the last stitch. Chain 2 and turn.

Row 18 1DC into same stitch as the Chain 2. Decrease DC into each of 3 DC of previous row just like Row 8 of main structure of the shawl.
Row 19 Repeat Row 9 of the main body of the shawl.

Row 20 1SC into each stitch of row 19 to get 30 stitches across. Leave a lengthy tail to sew the pocket onto the shawl around 3 sides of the pocket. (I kept 40 inches in order to have some left over the weave in before cutting.) To sew on pockets, I used the mattress stitch and placed pockets along seam after row 11 of shawl, and chose the following for different heights of people. Small: pocket placed 4 bunches from bottom of shawl length.

Medium: pocket placed 3 bunches from bottom of shawl length. Large: pocket placed 2 bunches from bottom of shawl length.
Place 2nd pocket the same distance from the first Rows of the shawl, and the same amount of bunches from the end.

Tassels Cut 6 pieces of yarn at 12 inches long each, for each tassel. You may have 16 tassels total on each end of the shawl. Equals 192 strands to get 2 sets of 16 tassels total.

Use a larger hook size (I used size 10 mm) to grab all 6 strands of the tassel from the back side of the shawl, pulling through from the front. Loop around from the back to the front and pull the ends of the strings through to show the wrap around loop at the top of the tassel, nicely taut.

For placement, I used the space between the front facing hdc at the ends of the shawl. One more space to total 2 tassels in the ribbed HDC area of the ends of the shawl. The remaining tassels fill in every other of the 3 DC bunches across the end of the shawl, looping through the Chain 2 and 1DC that began each row of the shawl.
